The primary role of a mortgage broker is to source and secure the most suitable deals available for a client. 

The process normally starts with an initial fact-find to understand your needs and objectives. Building a good relationship with you and understanding your situation is key to ensure we give the most suitable advice.

I worked at a high street mortgage lender for eight years - and a lot of people often start their mortgage journey by seeing their bank or building society. They have regular dealings with them and trust them, so it's a good reference point.

But shopping around is an absolute must. Your bank will only have access to a handful of products whereas a broker has access to potentially thousands. In most instances the broker would have access to your bank's products as well as many more.

It's not just about interest rates, each mortgage provider has their own affordability models and criteria, and some will look more favourably on your circumstances than others and may therefore lend more.
